My time at EMHS (10th-12th grade) was a time of reintegration into American culture after having been overseas from 3rd grade to 9th grade. Friendships made in German club, Band, Honor society and in class and in church were memorable and helpful with my acculturation. English, German, Math and Science classes taught gave me a good basis for my studies at OU in Civil Engineering first, and then in Linguistics after I changed my major. In retrospect, French would have been a more appropriate language to study since I live and work in French-speaking West Africa. My job in linguistics has morphed into one in administration and so I think I use a little bit of all that I learned every day.

As I was heavily involved in the music and drama departments at EMHS, this was where I garnered many of my experiences that would shape my adulthood. Under the tutelage of Terry Attebery, I developed a strong work ethic in all areas, not just music and music performance. Professionalism, dedication, efficiency, and striving for excellence were all invaluable tools learned; and working so closely with my fellow classmates helped me realize the importance of friendship, cooperation, and loyalty.

I came to Edmond Memorial for the last two years of my high school career. I was lucky to play basketball with some great players. I was also luck to play football with some great players. With athletics, I never felt like an outsider. In the classroom was another world. Athletics taught me to respect a person both on and off the court. Coach DelaGarza and Coach Lantz were two excellent coaches who showed me that athletics and academics could work together. The faculty and staff at Memorial opened their classrooms and their hearts to me. Many of them had the influence on me to become a teacher.

In college, Edmond students were able to balance the new changes with more ease than other students, due to the strong course-loads and the opportunities presented in high school. My education in Edmond offered several active leadership roles, athletic team involvement, social opportunities as well as several options for an enhanced education, such as AP courses, speed reading, and sign language.   I will always look at my time in the school system as a positive and fulfilling experience.  One vivid opportunity that made an impact – Swine Week.  No matter what clique or group students were part of, we pulled together, raising thousands of dollars to help others. This event reflects life through work, church, and community. Thanks, Edmond.

Lori Ramsey
Class of 1980

Electronic Discovery Forensics Expert

University of Colorado, BS Neuroscience,
BA Women’s Studies;
Golden Gate University Law School

High school taught me how to be competitive and strive for excellence through music. I would not have the multiple degrees I have today or the lifestyle I’m afforded in Silicon Valley but for my experiences at Edmond High School. I’ve been highly successful in the legal industry as a computer forensics analyst and give myself back to the community as a victim’s advocate for battered and abused women.

Over the years I've found that the strong foundation built by my early education in the Edmns Public Schools has allowed me to achieve many things academically and proffessionally. I feel certain that the quality educators and strong parental support made the difference in my education. I did not realize at the time tht the lessons I was learning would not only improve my test scores but also develop my ability to apply the lessons to other aspects of my life. My work is centered in oceanography and marine sciences, so I likent my experience in Edmond Public Schools to that of a fertile tital estuary.  I was givne all the nourishment, shelter and support I needed to move into the world and make my own way.
David Goin 2008 Oklahoma Administrator of the Year

On August 30 our own Superintendent of Edmond Public Schools, David Goin, was named the 2008 Oklahoma Administrator of the Year by the Oklahoma Association of School Administrators (OASA). This recognition is the highest award presented each year to a school superintendent. To be chosen as the state’s top administrator, the selection committee recognizes an individual who represents strong moral values; demonstrates a successful experience in top level educational administration; possesses a sound dynamic and realistic philosophy in education; inspires and motivates people; promotes personal and professional growth in himself and others; and is an active participant in local, state and national professional organizations. Dr. Goin is all of that!

A 31-year veteran of public education, all in Oklahoma, he has served in three school districts with the past nine years as Superintendent of Edmond Public Schools. Dr. Goin began his career in Moore Public Schools as a teacher. He also served the district as assistant elementary principal and principal before moving to Norman School District as an elementary principal and middle school principal.

Throughout his career, Dr. Goin has been inside the classroom – even after he left the teaching field. Lundy Prater, who taught fourth grade in Norman said when he became principal there, she noticed it was not a desk job to him. “It seemed that everywhere I went, he was there,” she said, “then I realized he was just doing his job.” “His compassion for children was evident from the beginning of his career as a teacher,” said David Autry, his very first principal. That compassion continues in Edmond where he can be found visiting classrooms, eating lunch with children or attending those many activities that can be found in a district with fifteen elementary schools, five middle schools and three high schools.

We always knew our superintendent was the best – now everyone across the state knows he is the best!
